Back when Edgar Allan Guzman was starting in the business, people told him that he looked like Diether Ocampo and that didn’t really make him happy.
Why should he be content with being, you know, a carbon copy?
Today, nobody tells Edgar that he looks like Diether Ocampo. It has become the other way around — you know, doesn’t Diether Ocampo look like him?
Edgar has proven himself in more than just the looks department. In a short span of time (barely three years), he metamorphosed into a versatile actor, threatening to wrestle the “Indie King” title from Coco Martin who has gone mainstream and bagging a Best Actor Award (for Ligo Na U, Lapit Na Me) in last year’s Cinemalaya and, lately, accolades for his performance as Gino Sanchez, a reality-show contestant in the staging of the Lino Brocka classic film Bona (with Eugene Domingo as leading lady) by PETA (Philippine Educational Theater Association).
Joel Lamangan: “Edgar is a revelation. Very good performance. Edgar is the new discovery that theater can be proud of. Congrats!”
Gil Portes: “Edgar has a powerful stage presence that made for a memorable performance. The stage is now his ouster.”
Mel Chionglo: “Stage newcomer Edgar’s remarkably true performance is intelligent and nuanced. Edgar as Gino Sanchez is sexy with a stirring voice and stage presence. He is a genuine theater find.” (Note: During the thanksgiving playdate of Bona on Sunday, Sept. 23, an “important announcement” will be made before an audience that includes Nora Aunor and Phillip Salvador, stars of Bona’s movie version. For tickets, call 0917-8390768 or 0920-5340102.)
His dreams are coming true. He has released a CD titled Lite (with the song Hanggang Dito Na Lamang already at the Top 10 of the 103.5 WOWFM charts); he’s playing an offbeat role as a gay seaman in Charo Santos-Concio’s Maalaala Mo Kaya tomorrow night, Sept. 22; he’s playing Pedrong Walang Takot (a role turned down by Ryan Agoncillo) in Lola Basyang, Unitel Pictures/Studio 5 2012 Metro Filmfest entry; and he has just received a Youth Achievement Award from the FAMAS last Tuesday, Sept. 18.
By insistent public demand, Edgar is back for more “sexy talk” which he first did two years ago. Like the many milestones in his career, Edgar’s “sexy” answers have changed considerably.
