UPOU online education for all

MANILA, Philippines - Individuals whose work schedule or family obligation prevents them from schooling can now earn their college or graduate degree. This is possible through UP Open University (UPOU), Commission on Higher Education’s National Center of Excellence in Open Learning and Distance Education.        

“We want (to provide) wider access to quality education,” offers UPOU Chancellor Grace Javier Alfonso on the cyber campus’ mandate. “(We want to offer) help to higher education institutions… we can connect with the other universities and maybe other universities can look at us as template. We also want to reach (out to) the faculty of the different SUCs (state universities and colleges) and private higher education institutions for them to take the courses. They can right away, without leaving their places, implement the new knowledge.”

In the past 17 years, UPOU has produced more than 3,000 graduates from the degree-granting units of Faculty of Education, Faculty of Information and Communication Studies and Faculty of Management and Development Studies. It offers pre-baccalaureate, baccalaureate, pre-master’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.  

Recently, e-UP, the information communication technology (ICT) flagship project of UP president Alfredo Pascual that interconnects all UP campuses nationwide, kicked off at UPOU Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna. The interconnectivity will mean academic and operational excellence. The project is also in response to Pascual’s battle cry “One UP,” which means “one standard, the same quality of education, academic excellence and efficiency,” among UP campuses, says Chancellor Alfonso.

The e-UP project also allows the university to share resources with other higher education institutions. There will be an exchange of knowledge, experiences and expertise through Web-aided lectures.
