Less than 100 days to go before London Olympics

-

MANILA, Philippines - Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games are scheduled to start on July 27 where 10,500 athletes from 205 countries will compete in the world’s biggest sporting event. Last April 18, Britain officially started the countdown to the 2012 London Olympics with 100 days left before the opening festivities.

The 100-day countdown ceremony was led by British Ambassador to the Philippines Stephen Lillie and other British Embassy officials along with the Filipino athletes who are slated to fight for the country’s pride in London. They all participated in a 100-meter run at the Manila Polo Club field in Makati City.

The Philippines hasn’t won a gold medal in the Olympics and it is something that has eluded the country for the past years. Despite that, the country has already won a number of bronze medals and a pair of silver medals. But the country is hopeful this time around.

This summer, six Filipino athletes will compete: One from boxing, two from swimming, two from athletics, and one from shooting. Though six athletes have made it to London’s pre-Olympic qualifications, including boxer Mark Anthony Barriga and long jumper Marestella Torres, the Philippine Olympics Committee (POC) said they are targeting to field at least 10 athletes.

A few Filipinos will also be part of the carrying of the torch across the UK. Included among the 8,000 torch-bearers are Reymundo Enteria, Marcy Reyes and Filipino-Briton Steven Cheung. Some Philippine bets are also competing in the Paralympics, power lifters Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta and Achele Guion and table-tennis player Josephine Medina.
