Viloria-Romero match on Solar Sports

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - One of the worst losses of Brian Viloria’s (30-3-0, 17 KOs) career came at the hands of Omar Niño Romero (photo) (30-4-2, 12 KOs).

Viloria was coming off a really good stretch in his career before he faced Romero. He was coming of a dominant first round knockout win over Eric Ortiz for the WBC light flyweight title and an unanimous decision victory over Jose Antonio Aguirre to defend the title.

Romero, who was then ranked a lowly 10th by the WBC, did not appear to be a legitimate threat to Viloria. He did not have knockout power and his boxing skills looked rudimentary. Viloria, on the other hand, was undefeated and had a sterling amateur career. But Romero prepared the perfect gameplan against Viloria. He outworked the champion, outlanding him in total punches 245-113. Viloria looked uninterested in that fight; barely letting his hands go.

Viloria cashed in his rematch clause three months later. The second fight was more competitive but Viloria still failed to solve the riddle that is Romero. The defending champion kept his belt via a majority draw. However, the result was changed to a no contest as Romero failed the post fight drug test.

It has been more than five years since the two met in the ring. Both of the fighters experienced ups and downs during that period and now they’re scheduled to complete their trilogy.

On April 1, Viloria will defend his WBO flyweight title against Romero in Manila. This is not just another title defense for Viloria as he knows that he needs to settle the score against Romero. Revenge will be on Viloria’s mind when he laces up his gloves to take on Romero for the third time.

The winner of this fight will most likely fight WBA flyweight champion Hernan Marquez next.
