Creatures of the night

Joy Jonette Chuyaco - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - So it’s Halloween again. Creepy decorations are out, party invites are sent, scary stories are told, and, of course, spine-chilling movies (classics or new ones) are shown. Surely, movie buffs are now busy organizing movie nights with friends or families. How about including these films about blood-thirsty creatures? Have a Happy Halloween!

Twilight. While it is true that the movie centers on the great love story of Edward and Bella, it still has enough vampire-in-action scenes to satisfy viewers. If one is looking for a light vampire kind of movie, this is sure recommended — imagine falling in love with a vampire.

Let Me In. A bullied boy befriends the new girl in the neighborhood. There seems to be something strange with the girl but their friendship continues. Could it be that she is hiding something? Is she really as innocent and young as how she looks

Bram Stoker’s Dracula. This one is truly a classic — not only the story but also the main character who is Count Dracula. No matter how old the popular icon may be viewers are still up for watching him in action. Actually, several vampire movies were inspired by this original masterpiece.

Interview with the Vampire. Would you dare to interview a vampire? A man who claims to be a vampire tells his story to a reporter. The story then goes back to the past where it all began. After hearing the story, the reporter wished for proof. Well, he might just get more than what he wished for.

Underworld. Welcome to the battle of the creatures of the night. This is like a war film, only the ones involve are vampires, werewolves and lycans. There is more to the movie than just blood and battles. Its prequel and sequel are truly worth following. Another one is coming up in 2012.

Blade. What happens when a half-vampire, half-human guy fight against the pure vampires? War of the Vampires! The movie is just about it. So expect actions, actions and more actions, plus, the cool moves and get-up of Blade, the hero in the movie.

Lost Boys. The 1987 movie is about a town wherein people just disappear without a trace. Many think that it’s because of a gang but they aren’t actually sure. Michael, Sam and their newly-divorced mom Lucy have just moved in to this town to start life anew. Is this the right place or are they getting themselves into more trouble?

Priest. It’s humans vs vampires. And who will be the victor? The movie brings viewers into another world. After centuries of battle with vampires, humans live in a walled city to protect themselves. However, when a kidnapping incident occurs, war rages again.

Fright Night. The 1985 comedy-horror film is about a teenager who discovers that his new neighbor is a vampire. As expected, no one believes him and so he seeks help from someone who specializes in dealing with vampires. Is this a good idea?

Wolf (1994). A man was bitten by a wolf and was turned into one. As he struggles with personal problems, he also needs to go through adjustments in his body and his lifestyle — he’s now a werewolf. Is it easier to deal with problems now that he’s a werewolf, as he can use this to his advantage, or is it a burden?
