'Tis the season of Tiangge shopping

MANILA, Philippines - The “ber” months are here signaling the start of celebrating Christmas in the Philippines. By this time, we can already hear in the air Christmas carols and jingles and can see some enterprising souls making Christmas lanterns and decors for the coming Yuletide season.

For those shopping for Christmas gifts, the best place to shop in is the tiangge where prices of goods and products are much cheaper.

There are several tiangges in Metro Manila but the best tiangge to visit is at Greenhills Shopping Complex, where several manufacturers, suppliers, exporters, importers, distributors and other traders are exhibitors. The ongoing 18th Philippine Toys, Gifts, Housewares & Christmas Decors Fair is a must for budget-conscious shoppers.

Henry Babiera, president of the Prime Asia Trade Planners & Convention Organizers and considered the tiangge king, offers tips on how one can get best deal for hard-earned money.

Babiera says shoppers must have a complete list of all items they plan to buy and stick to that list. The purpose of the list is to prevent them from impulsive buying. Then check how much cash or credit you can spend.

Shoppers must be simple in their attire if they prefer tiangges. By the way, they can move easily and more comfortable. Don’t wear expensive or expensive-looking jewelry so you don’t attract pickpockets or snatchers. Hold your bag all the time and let one hand hold the items while you are examining or choosing some items. Check your receipt before leaving the country. If you notice an error, complain immediately.

When shopping in tiangges, go around and compare prices, go from one booth to another. Check the merchandise. See if it is okay. Check for rips, tears, dirt or smears. Ask the price. Then the price you want. If the seller is reluctant, give a higher price. If the seller is still reluctant, pretend to leave or transfer to another booth.
