Zia is anything but simple

Chuck Gomez - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - It has been believed that every few years, great talent emerges in the most unexpected time and from the most unexpected person. One such example is Zia Quizon, the youngest daughter of showbiz royal couple Dolphy and Zsa Zsa Padilla.

The mainstream release of her self-titled, debut album under Polyeast Records immediately established a solid following among music aficionados. Zia’s rise to popularity may be gradual but it is sure to reach profound heights because contrary to what some may assume, what propels her is not really her showbiz lineage but her exhilarating passion for her craft as a singer and songwriter.

Zia contains six tracks, including covers of such standards as Sheena Easton’s So Much In Love, Charlie Chaplin’s Smile (dedicated to Dolphy) and a fresh take on Zsa Zsa’s seminal classic Mambobola. The carrier single is an original composition by Zia titled Simple Girl.

Simple Girl is written and performed with sincerity, thus making the song work to a lot of people. “I draw my material from everyday experiences,” explains Zia who is currently a Literature major at De La Salle University.

Her distinctive style of singing is laced with pitch-perfect freshness and childlike sense of wonder. What attracts her growing number of fans to her is the fact that she’s not trying to sound like her iconic mother.

“This has been one of my dreams. I love to express myself through music. I grew up listening to diverse genres of music and I thank my parents and my family for exposing me to it,” says Zia. “I am aware that my mother is Zsa Zsa Padilla and my father is Dolphy and they will always be a part of who I am and I want to make them proud. My older sister Karylle is blessed for having been able to make her own mark in the industry and that is exactly what I am aspiring for.”

In line with the release of her debut album, Zia will have her first solo show titled Simple Girl at Teatrino in Promenade, Greenhills tonight, the eve of her birthday. Simple Girl is presented by Stages in cooperation with Polyeast Records with Marvin Querido as musical director.

Zia will be dishing out some of today’s chart-toppers and homegrown favorites as well as selected tracks from her new album.

“My parents taught me the value of professionalism and hard work and I guess this is the perfect time for me to apply the values I learned from them.”

Critics have proclaimed Zia as a breakthrough artist and the newest acoustic diva to watch out for. But for Zia, she is still the same loving, young and beautiful girl who just wants to share her music to the world.

Zia’s dedication and love for her craft enables her to transcend all the known boundaries of what is perceived to be simple. She is on her way to unimaginable heights of greatness. And that is not simple at all.

Simple Girl is supported by ASAP Rocks and Belo Medical Group. For bookings and inquiries, contact Stages at 818-1111 local 225.
