Amy Winehouse on BIO

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - In 2007, Amy Winehouse nervously took the stage at Joe’s Pub in downtown New York for her first ever US performance. Sporting a beehive and tattoos, Amy captured audiences’ attention, not just through her music but also her compelling and unusual stage presence.

Already a certified celebrity in England, the retro-soul singer burst into the American music scene with her smash hit Rehab, followed soon thereafter by tabloid coverage of her drug addiction. Now with her sudden and as yet unexplained death rocking the music world, BIO, looks back at the recording artist’s tumultuous personal life via the television event Amy Winehouse.

Airing tonight at 6, and tomorrow, Aug. 14 at 1 p.m., and Aug. 15, 4 a.m., the channel traces her journey to stardom revealing how she made her very first paycheck, how her demo landed at Island/Universal and how she was launched into the limelight.

An enormous talent who treaded the thin line between artistic greatness and imminent disaster, Amy’s childhood was anything but edgy. Her life in the spotlight, though, was rife with unpredictable public displays, drug problems, arrests and seemingly unhealthy relationships, notably with Blake Fielder-Civil, that often overshadow her notable achievements.

Praised, loved and admired by fans and fellow music greats, the TV feature provides audiences a peek into that exclusive window of her chaotic, offbeat and compelling story. With accounts from close friends, colleagues and the media who witnessed the climb and fall of Amy Winehouse, BIO presents insights that may help us understand the defiant, self-deprecating but somehow wistful singer who never apologized for being who she was.
