MANILA, Philippines - This month, Big Bird and Elmo from the well-loved Sesame Street series take center stage at the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center (NFSDC) with the showing of One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure at the Digistar Planetarium.
In One World, One Sky, Big Bird and Elmo are visited by Hu Hu zhu their new friend from China and together they use their imagination to set in motion an amazing space adventure. This not only takes them to the Big Dipper, the North Star, the Moon, and the night sky, but also lets them discover the common bond they will always share — that they do share the same sky though they are living in opposite sides of the planet.
A joint project of Chicago’s Adler Planetarium, the Sesame Workshop, the Beijing Planetarium, and New Jersey’s Liberty Science Center, One World, One Sky features the Sesame Street characters in live-action footages combined with computer-generated sets. This is also the first time that these characters were filmed in high definition for a planetarium show.
One World, One Sky, which began at the Planetarium last June 4, also offers kids an exciting introduction to astronomy and an appreciation for science in general. It also teaches kids about cross-cultural connections and moral values, especially on friendship.
Stargazing, in the meantime, continues at the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center with the recent Astrocamp at SM by the Bay at the Mall of Asia.
Astrocamp, which is a joint project of the Astrocamp Observatory Services and the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center, gave family members and friends an opportunity to camp out and explore the night sky.
Participants were able to see the moon, the stars, satellites, and planets up close with the help of high-powered telescopes. They were also able to touch authentic meteorites and learn more about constellations, telescopes, and trivia about the awesome universe during lectures by Dr. Armando Lee of the Astrocamp Observatory Services and Bernardo Esporias, author of Jewels of the Night Sky. Cosmic Collisions, as narrated by Robert Redford, completed the Astrocamp experience.
The Digistar Planetarium shows and Astrocamp are some of the fun and educational events at the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center. For details, visit www.sciencediscovery.ph or call 556-2153, 556-2193 or 556-2179.
