Pacific Licensing Studio redefines licensing

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Licensing is everywhere. For instance, your favorite Korean novelas need to be properly licensed before they can be shown by the local TV networks, in the same way that Kim Chui and Gerald Anderson’s soap opera has to be licensed out by ABS-CBN before it can be shown in other parts of Asia.

Among many other things, licensing makes it possible for people from different parts of the globe to watch and enjoy TV shows, sports programs and movies which are produced internationally.

A licensing company such as the Pacific Licensing Studio (PLS) serves as the link between the creator or producer of a brand with any entity that wishes to use them for any commercial purpose. A licensing company is similarly responsible for licensing any merchandise associated with a brand.

With upcoming movies such as Batman “Dark Knight Rises”, Happy Feet 2, The Hobbit and Superman, PLS will have its hands full in licensing the movies’ merchandise. It is interesting to know that once the newest Batman movie hits the big screen and several Batman merchandise are sold, each one of those merchandise has been licensed through PLS.

Aside from Warner Bros. Consumer Products, PLS also handles the licensing requirements of Smiley, Hasbro and Bang on the Door.

For Warner Bros., PLS licenses Looney Tunes, DC Comics and Tom & Jerry, to name a few. Looney Tunes, the home of classic characters such as Tasmanian Devil, Tweety, Tom and Jerry, Flintstones and Bugs Bunny, is the only character brand that promotes active lifestyle. DC Comics, meanwhile, is the creator of the world’s most famous super hero characters such as Green Lantern, Superman and Wonder Woman, among others.

For Smiley, one of the world’s most recognizable icons, PLS is bringing a brand that has seamlessly blended with the cool and hip culture of today’s youth. Smiley products encompass various domains from sportswear and home decors to travel essentials. Armed with the happy vibes associated with its icon, Smiley is also creating a unique lifestyle for teens known as Smiley Society. The Smiley Society’s concept is based on youth culture style tribes, a group of people that dress in a distinctive style to show their membership in the group.

For Hasbro, a branded play company providing children and families around the world with a wide-range of immersive entertainment offerings, PLS is proud to license its wide range of products which include: toys and games, television programs, motion pictures and video games. Hasbro strives to delight its customers through the strategic leveraging of well-known and beloved brands such as Littlest Pet Shop and Play -doh.

For Bang on the Door, PLS licenses 80 original humorous animal characters plus newly created characters which are now produced as accessories, stationeries, greeting cards, calendars, stickers and many more. Bang on the Door has similarly developed new products such as make up, make up gift set, make up bags, umbrellas, etc. Bang on the Door is known for its strong, simple and humorous images of animals with black outlines, bold, flat colors, with writing underneath – a concept which proved very popular with people of all ages.

Indeed, licensing covers a whole lot of aspects of a certain brand. So if you get a hold of a shirt with Ryan Reynolds a.k.a Green Lantern printed on it, rest assured that PLS has a hand on it.
