Here are two reactions to yesterday’s column about the Willing Willie/Janjan issue:

I read your column today. I just wanted to clarify that it isn’t true that I only pay lip service to defending the rights of children instead of doing something concrete in the Senate. In fact, as chairman of the Senate Justice Committee, I authored in 2006 the Juvenile Justice Welfare Law that sought to prevent minors being placed in jails together with hardened criminals.

The Senate records will show that I tirelessly defended children’s rights in pushing for this measure. For nearly 20 years, I have been a staunch human rights advocate. I hope I somehow clarified the facts about my track record as a legislator.

The law that prohibited minors from being jailed together with hardened criminals spared thousands of minors who otherwise would have been raped or murdered or abused and exploited while incarcerated with adults.

Child abuse — reklamo ng lahat ng sawsaweros at sawsaweras at mga usiseros and usiseras; ngunit ang di nila pansin, si Janjan hindi naman nagre-reklamo. Kung sino pa ang hindi “naaabuso” mas matindi ang reklamo at akala mo sila ang naabuso, mas matindi pa kaysa kay Janjan na sinabi nilang biktima ng “child abuse” ngunit hindi naman nagrereklamo.

Willie (Revillame’s) detractors are crying out “child abuse,” yet they cannot even define what really is “child abuse?” Hay naku, onli in da Philippines --- the land of sawsaweros and sawsaweras, magagaling lang sa simula at sa pagpabatikos, ngunit sa bandang huli wala rin namang nagagawa lalo na pag ang issue ay tuluyan nang humupa.

The picture of Maroon 5 vocalist Adam Levine is much too bold for this paper, so we have to crop it from the waist down if only to show that he indeed did it for a cause --- strip to the buff, that is.

According to a press bulletin sent to Funfare Update, Adam wanted to “make a statement” by posing nude (with his private part covered by the female hands coming from behind him) for Cosmopolitan, one of the top magazine in UK for the cancer organization Everyman. Not only did he get the attention of screaming gals and gays but he made prostate cancer widely known to the public.

The story included this statement from Dr. Philip Chua: Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers in man around the world, killing one almost every 19 minutes, and a new case is discovered every two and a half minutes. In the Philippines, it is one of the top five cancers among men, and in 2005 alone, about 4000 new prostatic cancer cases were found.

To prevent prostate cancer, studies suggest that being vegetarian or vegan reduces the risk of prostate cancer — a practice that Adam Levine lives up to as stated by his band mate Mickey Madden who was quoted in an interview as saying that Adam includes 85 percent vegetables in his diet for health reasons.

Asked he did it, Adam said, “I often have to be told by the people around me that it’s inappropriate to be as naked as I am. But I live in California, where it’s always warm, so why not.”

To add to the tastefulness of the shoot, Cosmopolitan got Adam’s current girlfriend, Victoria Secret model Anne Vyalitsyna to cover up his “essentials.” The shoot was also a perfect follow-up to introduce Maroon 5’s new single, Never Gonna Leave this Bed, from their new album Hands All Over.

Concert for OFWs tonight at the Big Dome

The EDSA People Power Commission, together with the Department of Labor and Employment, the Overseas Welfare Administration, the Office of the Vice President and other government and business organizations are sponsoring a concert tonight at 8 pm at the Araneta Coliseum for the benefit of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Proceeds of the concert BaliKaBayani will go to a fund to support the OFWs recently repatriated from Libya, Japan, Kuwait, Egypt, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
