MANILA, Philippines - Relatives and family members of Filipinos in Japan can visit the TV5 Aksyon Center where Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) set up a Libreng Tawag booth at the office of the TV network in Novaliches, Quezon City. The free calling service enabled relatives to make international phone calls to family members who may be affected by the powerful earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, there are a total of 305,972 Filipino nationals in Japan. The magnitude 9 earthquake that hit the northeastern coast of Japan was followed by a tsunami that caused further massive destruction. The country’s largest telecoms company has been providing free calls in times of disasters and emergencies through its corporate social responsibility and community service program Kabalikat. Previously, a Libreng Tawag service was set up at the DFA for the relatives of overseas Filipino workers in Libya.
