TelPad: Game changer, market shaker

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Long Distance Telecommunication (PLDT) Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan headed the launch of the company’s latest landline innovation, the PLDT TelPad, at the SMX Convention Center recently.

The PLDT TelPad offers a landline service with a touch-screen mobile tablet and high-speed myDSL service all under one service plan. Subscribers can use the PLDT TelPad to make and receive calls and access on-line applications via unlimited myDSL broadband service. The unit has a handset that serves as its charging dock.

“The future of our landline business lies on a digital solution. With the advent of the PLDT TelPad, the landline is not only reborn but it radically changes the way we communicate,” said Pangilinan.

Joining Pangilinan in ushering the PLDT TelPad in the market were his team of PLDT bigwigs Napoleon Nazareno, president and chief executive officer; Eric Alberto, SVP and customer sales and marketing group head; Dan Ibarra, Retail Business Group head; and Patrick Tang, PLDT VP for Retail Voice Acquisition.

Alberto and Nazareno announced that the launch of the PLDT TelPad is complemented by the completion of the P2.8B upgrade of the PLDT Domestic Fiber Optic Network with a total of 10,050 kilometers connecting 68 nodes. This means that PLDT can well support the high-bandwidth requirements of all their innovations, including the PLDT TelPad, which Nazareno described, as “future-inspired.”

“The PLDT TelPad is a world’s first,” Ibarra added. “It is conceptualized, developed and assembled here in the country using world-class technology. Indeed, it is a triumph of Filipino innovation.”

Ibarra elaborated on the functions of the TelPad, some 20 units of which were brought into the venue for people to try out. The team also showed how subscribers can use the TelPad to update themselves with friends via Facebook, play popular video games, access utility bills, see what new products are in the market, locate establishments, watch movies and play music.

What’s cooler is that you can do all these things in your favorite spot at home because the Telpad is portable and WiFi-ready, thanks to the new PLDT myDSL WiFi + modem in one. Ibarra further elaborated that the gadget enables subscribers to connect their Internet-powered gadgets practically anywhere inside the house, even for simultaneous users. The product works perfectly with the Telpad for a heightened and more enjoyable digital experience.

“It’s your entertainment system, your personal computer and still your PLDT landline all in one,” he quipped.

The PLDT TelPad service starts at Plan 1849 with the unit bundled with the plan. Existing PLDT myDSL customers only need to add as low as P500/month to upgrade to the TelPad plans.

“The PLDT TelPad is our game changer, our market shaker. Its features fit into our subscribers’ digital lifestyle,” said Pangilinan.
