The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - For more than 20 years, Hair Asia has been organizing the most prestigious hair and makeup competition that assembles the best and brightest salon professionals nationwide. For over 50 decades, Sunsilk has been a leading hair-care authority and one of the most trusted brands all worldwide.

Last March, Hair Asia and Sunsilk came together to hold Hair Asia’s 20th National Open Championship for Hair and Makeup.

In the same way that Sunsilk collaborated with top international hair experts for its Sunsilk Co-Creations campaign, the brand chose to team up with Evelyn Alvaran-Cruz, the grand lady of Hair Asia.

The National Open Championship for Hair and Makeup is one of Hair Asia’s annual competitions that are anticipated by salon professionals. Beauty aficionados trooped to the World Trade Center to witness thousands of hairdressers and makeup artists compete in Ladies’ Cut and Color, Commercial Makeup, Men’s Cut and Color and Bridal Makeup.

James Cooper and Hair Asia president Evelyn Cruz hosted the whole-day affair which kept a strong focus on the competitions.

Comprising the panel of judges were hairstylists Jude Hipolito and Rose Velasco, Philip Louie Kee, Tinette Ozamis-Puyat, Deng Foz, Angelo Justin, Bambbi Fuentes, Patrick Rosas, James, Albert Kurniawan and Ricky Dali together with Loida Pioc of L’Orèal Philippines, Akihiro Nomaguchi of Sabrina Fair Japan and Hair Asia Magazine cover girl, Chelsea Yao Robato.

This year’s lucky overall champion will join Evelyn and the Hair Asia delegation to Paris in November to attend the Hair World Olympics. The contingent will also include Dennis Santos, Hair Asia’s Regional chairman for Sta. Cruz, Laguna; Salon Spectacular 2009 grand champion, Arnel Palmera; and Edward Canale

Aside from the cash prizes and gift packs that awaited the competition winners, Les Reyes CEO of Reyes Haircutters also added P10,000 worth of scholarship grants to the prize package.

Winner in the Ladies’ Creative Colour Haircutting and Blowdry was Harizon Olivar, a first-timer in the arena.

The Commercial Hairstyle and Makeup Category was won by Bernard Plaza of Park Hair Salon, another relative newbie.

Albert Aparente of Gateway’s Mirage Salon bagged the top spot for the Men’s Creative Colour, Haircutting and Blowdry Category. The final category that could make or break the hopes of any aspiring grand champion was the Bridal Makeup category. Winner was Eduardo Canale for his inspired and masterful makeup application on his fairytale model-bride.

Grand champion title of Hair Asia’s 20th National Open Championship for Hair and Makeup went to Eduardo. Canale.

Hair Asia is gearing up again to hold the event that ends the year like no other, Salon Spectacular 2010 on Nov. 16 at the World Trade Center, Roxas Blvd., Manila.
