Motion picture spectacle of the year

- Danny Dolor -

Exhibited in 1966, the Fernando Poe Jr.-Susan Roces starrer Zamboanga was billed ‘Motion Picture Spectacle of the Year,’ a Christian falling in love with a Muslim princess.

Zamboanga brings to mind the 1937 film of the same title topbilled by FPJ’s father, Fernando Poe and Rosa del Rosario. While the two movies have the same setting, Mindanao, the stories are entirely different.

Two other FPJ-Susan Roces costume starrers followed Zamboanga: Perlas ng Silangan (1969, again with Mindanao as backdrop) and Pilipinas Kong Mahal (early ‘70s set during the Japanese Occupation).

Efren Reyes directed Zamboanga, produced by FPJ himself. — RKC
