Movies about the bitter side of love

MANILA, Philippines - Love is said to be the most wonderful feeling one can experience in one’s lifetime. It inspires, it excites. And it’s undeniably sweet. But, what happens when love becomes bitter? It could be depressing. It could be dangerous. It could be deadly. Movies about the bitter side of love usually entertain the viewers with a bit of what seems to be a love story followed by a full blast of suspense. Sometimes, filmmakers turn this kind of movies into comedy. Here are some of the famous movies that started out as sweet but turned out to be bitter:

Obsessed. Derek (Idris Elba), a successful married man was having the time of his life, until Lisa (Ali Larter), an attractive admirer came along. He was just being nice to her but she interpreted it as something else — love. When the faithful man started to ignore her, she couldn’t accept it. She planned to destroy everything and everyone who came between them. But the irritated wife (Beyoncé Knowles) was ready to fight for her family.

Swimfan. Ben (Jesse Bradford) thought what happened between him and Madison (Erika Christensen) was just a one-night stand. But he was wrong. Madison wants more of him. She wants them to be together. Ben made it clear to Madison that he has a girlfriend whom he really loves. However, Madison insists there’s something special between them — and so the chasing begins.

The Crush. How dangerous can a crush be? This movie is about a 14-year-old girl (Alicia Sylverstone) who develops a crush with a writer (Cary Elwes) older than she is. It is cute and sweet at first, but it begins to bother the writer when the girl tries to seduce him. Knowing this is wrong, he tries to avoid her. Surprisingly, the girl doesn’t take no for an answer. As the tagline of the movie says, “What Darian wants, Darian gets.”

Fatal Attraction. This 1987 movie scared people who enjoy one night stands. Dan (Michael Douglas), a married man, meets the tempting Alex (Glenn Close). He thinks a few drinks and a chat wouldn’t do any harm since his wife and son are out of town. As expected, he ended in bed with Alex. It was a wrong move. Alex doesn’t want a one-night stand. She wants forever — no matter what.

Homecoming. Usually, people get over their high school sweet hearts, but this isn’t the case with Shelby (Mischa Barton). When her ex-boyfriend Mike (Matt Long) comes to town for the homecoming Shelby was hopeful they will be back together. To Shelby’s surprise, Mike has a new girl. It seems Shelby is hanging on to her past and would do everything to get Mike back in her arms, even to commit murder.

Fear. Nicole (Reese Witherspoon) thinks her boyfriend is a dream come true. He is older, loving, a gentleman and a sure hunk, but he can be possessive in a freaking way. When Nicole breaks up with him, he goes violent towards whoever he thinks caused the split-up. David doesn’t stop until Nicole is back with him again.

Misery. Annie (Kathy Bates) felt like a winner when her favorite author Paul Sheldon (James Caan) ended up in her house. She carried him out of his car which had slid off the road during a heavy snow storm. Paul was heavily injured so Annie took care of him. In the beginning, it was a wonderful and comforting relationship; then, when Annie started to feel something special for Paul, she realized she just couldn’t let him go.

All About Steve. After their first failed date, Mary (Sandra Bullock), a single and crossword puzzle maker, is determined to convince Steve (Thomas Haden Chruch) that they are meant to be together. To get his attention, she makes a crossword puzzle which is all about Steve; then, she follows him everywhere he goes. Mary’s obsession is fast becoming Steve’s nightmare. This is a comedy film but it can be a little freaky, seeing how much Mary stalks Steve.

Mr. Wrong. What do you do if Mr. Right turns out to be Mr. Wrong? Martha (Ellen DeGeneres) had found her Mr. Right in Whitman (Bill Pullman). Everything was perfect until the guy’s other side came out. He became too possessive and obsessed. When Martha broke up with him, Whitman just couldn’t accept it; so, he pursued her again and again. Is there a way to stop him?

Play Misty for Me. If you think it’s easy to get away with one-night stands, think again and watch this movie (although this one is a hard to find). Dave (Clint Eastwood) is a famous and well-loved disc jockey. All is doing well until he has a one-night stand with Evelyn (Jessica Walter). Turns out that Evelyn is a big fan who constantly calls the station. This seems flattering but the truth is Evelyn is not an ordinary fan. She is an obsessed fan who will do everything to be in Dave’s world.
