Cinema Rehiyon 2010 features filmmakers from the regions

MANILA, Philippines - A number of emerging filmmakers from the regions will be featured in Cinema Rehiyon 2010 to be held at the CCP, Tanghalang Manuel Conde from Feb. 17 to 20.

Among them is Ray Gibraltar who hails from Iloilo. Gibraltar first gained the attention of cineastes with his breakthrough film, When Timawa meets Delgado. The film has earned rave reviews from critics here and abroad. This year, his film Wanted: Border  was the runaway winner at the Cinema One film competition, garnering Best Picture along with a slew of other awards. A film that defies a simple synopsis, Wanted: Border is a thriller that plays with our worst fears. The real ones, not the merely-imagined ones. The film will be shown during Cinema Rehiyon on Feb. 18 at 4:30 p.m.

Another filmmaker to watch out for is Noriel Jarito. Jarito is an ex-OFW whose films and documentaries are shot mostly in Pambujan, Northern Samar. His docu This Is Where Your Taxes Go has already gained wide media coverage for its unflinching look at poverty, political dynasties and corruption in a small town. His short docu Bingo is an indictment on priests who run the local town church. They use it to supervise bingo among the townsfolk, essentially turning the church into a bingo hall. Jarito’s films will be shown on Feb. 18 at 2:30 p.m.

Cinema Rehiyon 2010 is a non-competition film festival that highlights the films and filmmakers from the various regions outside of Metro Manila. It is a project of the Cinema Committee of the NCCA in cooperation with the Cultural Center of the Philippines. All screenings are free.
