Watch out for Katy Perry party

SOUNDS FAMILIAR - Baby A. Gil -

Like me I am sure there are those of you out there who sort of feel guilty thinking of how this promises to be a party weekend. Not right. After all the horror of the big flood. Not with so much tragedy and loss around us. Maybe time and money to be spent can be put to better use. Maybe there can be way for such things to come together for the greater good during times like these.

I hope somebody comes up with a solution to this, one where we can all do our share of helping and then still enjoy ourselves watching Katy Perry perform in her concert at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds to be moved later this month.

I still recall how Katy Perry became the sensation of the summer of 2008. The former gospel singer initially sounded like another Madonna wanna-be with her song I Kissed a Girl. I thought that this is just somebody trying to do a shocker so she’d get famous. But as time passed and we got more and more into the song and what Perry was trying to say, we also realized that she was more than perky and sassy. She could tell stories that we enjoy listening to.

I Kissed A Girl was hailed one of the breakthrough recordings of the year and Perry, only 23 years old, a major discovery. She rode on the success of her platinum selling debut album One Of The Boys with all the swagger and aplomb of a born star. With her songs topping charts all over the world, Perry also went on a roll.

I Kissed a Girl got a Best Female Pop Vocal Performance nomination at the 2009 Grammy Awards. Perry also got five nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards, was named Best New Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards where she was the host, and was named Best International Female Artist at the 2009 Brit Music Awards.

I Kissed A Girl was even nominated for Most Addictive Track at the MTV EMA, an honor it deserves, but lost out to So What by Pink. But no matter. Because it got something better. It was chosen by Time Magazine as the song by which the summer of 2008 will be remembered over other hits by such big names as Kid Rock and Coldplay.

Perry also got more hits out of One Of The Boys. Ur So Gay, her first recording joined the sales blitz. So did follow-ups like Waking Up in Vegas, Hot N Cold and even her surprisingly adept ballads, I’m Still Breathing and Thinking Of You. And I am sure that these hits will be what fans will expect Perry to sing in the MOA show.

I remember Perry as the very first girl I saw wearing an Obama print dress. I also remember how Perry opened the MTV EMA singing I Kissed a Girl sitting on a giant chopstick. Amusing and impressive. If her concert is anything like that then you can bet that Lady Gaga will get stiff competition as to whose was the most memorable Manila concert in the year end lists.

So if you want to watch Katy Perry Live in Manila, check out the tickets available. They are priced at P3,500 for VIP; P2,200, Gold; P1,200, Silver; and P400, Bronze. Log on to www.mtvphil.com for more info or better yet get your tickets now from Ticketworld at 891-9999 or www.ticketworld.com.ph.

Before I forget there is a very special band that will also perform in Perry’s show. Maybe they will open the show or come in during intermission. But no matter what they do, there is no way that anybody will think of Boys Like Girls as curtain-raisers or space fillers. This band is cute and hot right now and we are in luck that we will be able to watch them in that crucial moment when they are reaching the big time.

Love Drunk, its second album is in the US Top 10 this week and Taylor Swift appears in the Two Is Better Than One cut. That is how big these boys are.
