Movies that make us laugh

Joy Jonette Chuyaco - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - One of the most wonderful experiences we can have when watching a movie is to laugh, then laugh again, and laugh some more. Thanks to comedies; it has become a source of relief for our challenging and busy life. It doesn’t matter if the storyline of the movie is simple. The most important thing is that it’s light and it brings laughter. As they say, laughter is the best medicine; so a dose of comedy from time to time is healthy. Here are f films that make our day hilariously brighter:

Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999). Ever wonder what a gigolo does? This movie is about an innocent fish tank cleaner forced to turn himself into a gigolo. His adventures are sure to give a shocking discovery and 100 percent laughter to all viewers. It’s truly one of Rob Schneider’s best films.

The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988). How many funny scenes can you make in a movie about police work? Well, Naked Gun successfully made the entire movie, about Detective Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen), a bunch of laughter from start to finish. The movie has a light story with a heavy comedy. Its sequels, Naked Gun 2 1/2 and 33 1/3, are also must-sees.

Hot Shots (1991). A spoof of “Top Gun”. It’s the story of Topper Harley (Charlie Sheen) is a brilliant pilot who has personal issues which makes it hard for him to work on any mission. He finally accepts a mission and is determined to make it a success. Will Harley put things in his hands or will it hilariously go out of control? The sequel Hot Shots: Part Deux is also guaranteed to give us a good laugh.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994). This comedy was a successful debut film for Jim Carrey. It brought him fame and a booming career. It’s about a goofy guy who has a special sense of feeling for animals which became his tool in solving cases involving animals. A lot of people say Carrey’s acting was overly done, but it was pretty effective because they can’t help but laugh at almost every scene.

Tootsie (1982). He is a She. She is a He. This movie is about Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) who covers up as an actress to get a role in a TV program. Problem arises when Michael starts to fall in love with a co-actress; to add to the conflict, a co-actor is in love with Michael (as the actress). Now, Michael needs to do a challenging and ridiculous constant switching between two identities. How will he solve this double identity crisis?

Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993). This movie creatively turned a classic tale into a comedy film. Like the classic tale, it still focused on Robin Hood who is popularly known as the guy who steals for the poor. The difference is that this movie focused on the lighter side of Robin’s life: the training of armies, the key to a chastity belt, the green tights and more.

The Pink Panther. This 1963 original introduced the funny and clumsy detective Jacques Closseau (originally portrayed by Petter Seller). He amazingly solves a case better than any other detective. Watching him work will surely bring laughter and take off the pressure of solving a case. This year, another Pink Panther movie is coming soon. Will Detective Closseau’s (played by Steve Martin for the second time) antics be a hit once again?

Happy Gilmore (1996). Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) is a frustrated hockey player forced to play golf, which he is good at, to earn money. He instantly captures the hearts of many people, thus creating conflict with other golf players. This comedy brings humor in the golf course.

Meet the Parents (2000). Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) is all set and ready to meet his girlfriend’s strict parents—every man’s scariest experience. Greg never realized that he will go through a series of tests just to get the parents’ approval. Will Greg ever be accepted by them? Funny and embarrassing moments are the winning factor of this movie.

Scary Movie (2000). The movie (including its sequels) that gave a sense of humor to horror movies. It spoofed several scenes of original scary movies. After watching it, viewers will realize horror movies are not that scary after all. It just takes a spoof to lighten up a scary film.
