SM Cagayan de Oro celebrates Kagay-an Fest

MANILA, Philippines -  SM City Cagayan de Oro celebrates the Kagay-an Festival, its own version of the Mardi Gras with exciting activities that depict the city’s colorful history and rich cultural heritage.

The festival, which traditionally takes place in August during the annual feast of the city’s patron Saint Augustine culminates with a glorious parade of exquisite costumes and dances of its diversified people.

The celebration kicked off last Aug. 7 with the launch of Cagayan de Oro Jingle Contest in cooperation with the city government of Cagayan de Oro and the City Tourism Board. The grand finals was held last Aug. 15 at the mall’s Atrium.

The Ms. Kayan-an Talent Competition, on the other hand, was held on Aug. 19, also at the Atrium, where 15 young ladies will compete for the Miss Talent 2009 title.

The SM Department Store’s Slippers Design Contest will be held on Aug. 25, 4 p.m. at the mall’s Atrium and give mallgoers an opportunity to give their own look to the iconic beachwalk slippers.

A P500 minimum purchase at the SM Department Store’s shoes and bags and luggage departments and an inclusive purchase of beachwalk slippers until Aug. 25 entitles one to join the contest. Entries will be judged on the following criteria: Creativity/Quality of Workmanship, 50 percent; Relevance to the Festival, 30 percent and Usefulness, 20 percent. Prizes in SM gift certificates include P5,000 for the first prize; P3,000 for the runner-up; and P2,000 for the second runner-up.

The Kapamilya Caravan will make a stop at SM City Cagayan de Oro with John Lloyd Cruz and Rivermaya leading the way. It will be held on Aug. 28, 2 p.m. at Las Ramblas Parking Area. Cap the festival with a Spectacular Fireworks Display competition on Aug. 29, 7 p.m.
