MANILA, Philippines - There’s no such thing as a free meal. But every time Sam Oh tapes for Q-11’s True Confections, it seems the expression can be both true and false. Sam gets to taste and eat the cakes and pastries co-hosts Aileen Anastacio and Jackie Ang-Po prepare for the televiewers after the show and in-between takes.
She, on one hand, does her assignment the night before and delivers spiels succinctly for the camera. Whether she really gets a sinful cake for free or not, Sam enjoys being part of the lifestyle show. After all, hosting is a passion more than a business for this woman with a huge appetite and a shapely figure.
“There’s something new with the show,” enthuses Sam. “It is going to be a 45-minute show. It did get pretty good feedback. I was surprised that people are interested in baking and in desserts. I’m happy that the show is expanding. It is longer. So, we are eating longer.”
Aside from doing most of the talk and free tasting, Sam shares that she has “graduated to manual labor.” She now whips the cream while the two other hosts do the dirty work — cooking and baking.
What does she like most about True Confections?
“So what’s not to like about the show?,” replies Sam. “I’m coming here and I start eating and eating and eating. Everything we cook in the kitchen is really good.”
So, is it true that she has a huge appetite?
“I’m not picky (when it comes to food),” answers Sam, a Korean who has been living in Manila for more than 20 years. “I think I’m a foodie if that means mahilig kumain. I’m not a gourmand, someone with discriminating palate. I eat anything.”
Recently, Sam reached a milestone when she invited guests to her home and baked a cheese cake for them. She served them and the intimate gathering ended well. There are also instances where people would ask her the best dessert and cake she has ever tasted.
Tonight at 6:45, Sam, Aileen and Jackie will still treat everyone to a casual baking tutorial doing easy-to-make yet irresistible desserts. The three will also share secrets behind everyone’s favorite classic, modern, simple pastries and cakes, plus no-bake, fancy goodies.
Joining them is Dingdong Dantes, Goldilocks endorser.
True Confections is also on its fourth season. According to Sam, the hosts are much closer and they joke around. She adds Aileen and Jackie are funny and hilarious.
Although many consider her the leader of the True Confections group, Sam thinks much of the responsibilities lies on the chefs. They do the recipes and prepare the ingredients. As a host, Sam just shows up, reads the lines and gets the shots done.
On the side, Sam covers social events for Q-11’s Sam’s Quest and checks out the metro in Events Incorporated. She has a radio show with a campus format on RT. What Sam likes about it is, it is done live and allows her to hang out with a college friend-DJ and talk for three hours.
“I’m always happy,” ends Sam. “I have found a home in Q-11. I’m happy with what I’m doing now. (What about crossing over to mainstream channel like GMA 7?) Why not?”
