Piolo: I'm a cool dad; I can relate to children

- OPENLINE -

MANILA, Philippines - Drama is a road most traveled in Piolo Pascual’s acting book. Seeing Piolo enter the world of Cristy (Kristine Hermosa) and Ross (Derek Ramsay) in ABS-CBN’s Komiks Presents Mars Ravelo’s Nasaan Ka Maruja every Saturday is a welcome change for the TV series. However, it is a surprise to see Piolo perhaps coming in between lovers Cristy and Ross. Piolo has always been the good boy in most of his movies, except for Kahit Isang Saglit where his character Michael has feelings for his best friend’s fiancee.

Piolo’s unexpected appearance in Maruja has nothing to do with the show’s ratings. It was part of the plan to “create excitement and curiosity” among viewers, and to keep up with the series’ mystery-suspense feel.

Although followers of Maruja are puzzled as to what Piolo’s character will bring in the story, one thing is for sure: He holds a secret and is part of Cristy’s past.

Meantime, the good-looking, accommodating actor answers questions of Open Line readers:

How do you maintain your relationship with your son Iñigo who is based in the States? (From Sandie David, Ilocos Sur)

Whenever there’s a chance aside from phone conversation, I go there for events such as graduation. I was there two weeks ago. How often do I call? Every chance I get.

How do you handle ardent, persistent lady admirers? (Shierlane Pelayo, Davao City)

I just smile. I say, “Ha, ha, ha.”

Do you find yourself good-looking? (Vicky Lonboc, Taytay Rizal)

I try to look good because it is my job. It is part of the package to take good care of myself. It comes with the territory.

What type of dad are you? (Erlinda Suarez, Antipolo)

I’m a cool one. I love playing with kids, especially with my son. When we went to Disneyland, I was more kid-like than he. I love to play. I was once a kid. Nakaka-relate ako sa kanya. I play his games. I want to make up for the lost times. And, I don’t want to give him problems. I try to have good memories with him and to be open with him.

Does your entry to Maruja mean that it needs a big star to boost its viewership? (Anima Lora of Manila City)

I just wanted to work with Kristine again. It is a nice project. When they told me about it, (ratings) were never an issue. From Lobo, I also wanted to be seen on primetime before Lovers in Paris. It’s a breaker. — Jerry Donato
