The Tudors on HBO Signature
MANILA, Philippines - The Tudors returns in a second season on HBO Signature, tomorrow night at 10.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers is back in the 10-episode season as King Henry VIII, with series regulars Henry Cavill as Charles Brandon; Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn; Nick Dunning as Sir Thomas Boleyn; James Frain as Thomas Cromwell; guest star Peter O’Toole as Pope Paul III; and Jeremy Northam as Sir Thomas More.
In season one, King Henry VIII was a young monarch pursuing his own pleasures. Never intended to be king, it was only upon his brother’s death that Henry took the throne — and his brother’s wife, Katherine, as his queen. Soon after, he became obsessed with producing a male heir. He desperately needed a son to carry on the Tudor name and rule the family dynasty, but Katherine only bore him a daughter.
Henry lived a scandalous life. His appetite for love was legendary, but there was one affair in particular that would forever change history. Anne Boleyn was a seductive beauty who promised Henry the male offspring he so desperately wanted. In return, the king promised to make her queen and set about getting a divorce from Katherine.
Season two introduces a darker and more menacing Henry, willing to shatter a thousand years of tradition to get his own way. His determination to obtain a divorce from his devoted wife, Katherine, has caused great conflict with The Vatican. With the death of Clement VII and the arrival of Pope Paul III, Henry’s anger towards the Catholic Church has grown stronger. Lutheranism is on the rise in Europe.
The Reformation is on the horizon. England is poised for change and Henry’s place in history is about to be written.
