Parokya ni Edgar: Making jolly good music together

MANILA, Philippines - On one hot Thursday afternoon, six friends stood the heat of the sun atop a Jollibee branch to shoot the latest Yumburger commercial.

The band, Parokya ni Edgar, which has become a household name especially among the current music-loving generation, performs at their best just like in their many full-packed gigs.

After making a dozen hit songs, bagging various distinctions and recognitions for their very Pinoy and often hilarious of music - Parokya ni Edgar adds yet another feather in its cap with the latest jingle they wrote and performed for the country’s number one fast food chain- Jollibee.

Ang ganda ng concept na nai-share sa amin. Ang sarap gawan ng kanta kasi kasama na rin ng friendship ang fun experiences with friends and family. Na-enjoy ako gawin. Nagtulong-tulong kami gumawa ng jingle na to at nag-enjoy talaga kami in the process,” shares Chito.

The song, says Chito and the band, was not difficult to write at all. The words about the joy of being with your family and friends while being true to yourself just flowed easily and rhythmically. Writing the song also came easily since the band really loved to eat at Jollibee since their childhood years- and up until now that they are already dads and celebrities. And of course, what could only be their favorite food at Jollibee than the Yumburger! The band even has a favorite among their Jollibee fun moments- that of the challenge they posed for bassist Buhawi “Buwi” Meneses to eat the Yumburger in just two bites -. Something which he pulled off almost perfectly “Binigyan naming si Buwi ng P200 para kumain ng Yum ng dalawang subo lang,” shares Chito.

The new Yumburger jingle, that carries the distinct Parokya ni Edgar sound is upbeat, hip and something that teens can easily relate to. Entitled Iisang Sarap, the song speaks of being a real, cool yet responsible teen. Much like the real Pinoy teen that Jollibee believes in.

“It’s all about having fun with friends and family, as well as growing up with the Yumburger, which our band experienced. I hope they enjoy the song as much as we do,” says Chito.

Just like everyone’s favorite burger, Parokya ni Edgar has had a successful following with today’s teens. While Parokya ni Edgar’s original sound continues to leave an indelible mark in Filipino culture, Jollibee’s Yumburger remains the leader in the burger category with its distinct langhap- sarap burger goodness that is unmistakably Pinoy. With the burger patty made with 100 percent pure beef, Yumburger is a simple, pure delight with every bite. Indeed, ito ang langhap-sarap, Yum!

Both the Yumburger and Parokya ni Edgar are as positively Pinoy as they can get. No pretensions, no frills- just keeping it real, as they say.

The reason behind their undisputed staying power in the local music scene lies in their long-lasting friendship. Parokya ni Edgar started in 1993 as a band by a group of Ateneo high school students. Little has changed since they started performing in the original Club Dredd, the famous bar that thrived along EDSA a decade ago. Some of the band’s members already have families, yet they still retained the good vibes that they shared as youngsters. This bond is also the reason why Jollibee chose Parokya ni Edgar as the latest Yumburger endorsers.
