Witnessing miracles in movies

Joy Jonette Chuyaco - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - We have read and heard a lot about miracles, but how often do we see them? Well, most answers to this question would be seldom to none; because miracles don’t usually happen that’s why it is called miracle. Some people believe in it, while others think it’s a hoax; but admit it or not, every person has a desire to experience or witness a miracle. While waiting for a true miracle to happen, why not watch some of the famous miracles in movies. It is clearly just a movie, but it will keep your hope alive of seeing a true miracle someday. Here is a list of famous movies about miracles:

Bruce Almighty. What will it be like to have the powers of God? Well, only Bruce (Jim Carey) can share with us this experience, as he was given the privilege to be God. Bruce is totally enjoying the powers he possesses, but he just can’t take the responsibilities anymore. Being God is not easy after all.

Jesus. Any movie that tells about Jesus’ miracles is truly worth watching — the feeding of thousand people from just five loaves of bread and two fish, the healing of sick people, the turning of water to wine and more. Usually, people watch this kind of film during the Lenten Season when they want to reflect on their spiritual life.

Dr. Dolittle. Many people say that being a veterinarian is challenging because animals can’t talk to say how they feel. The movie is about the miraculous ability of Dr. Dolittle (Eddie Murphy) to communicate with animals. If there are miraculous healers for humans, then there’s Dr. Dolittle for animals.

Leap of Faith. Jonas (Steve Martin), a successful fake faith healer and his team visit and organize gatherings from town to town. Somehow, Jonas has the ability to make people believe that he is a miracle worker. But his so called faith healing is tested when he accidentally gets stuck in a small town. It seems like the people there is not so easy to fool after all, but a boy still believes that Jonas can heal. What will Jonas do? Lesson to be learned: Never play with miracles.

Joan of Arc. The miraculous courage and faith of Joan (a.k.a. Jeanne de’Arc) has served as an inspiration to many patriotic people. The movie shows the life, battles, victories and death of the French Heroine. Viewers will be touched and amazed with Joan (Milla Jovovich).

What Women Want. What if men can read women’s mind? That will be a perk for the guys. This is what exactly happened to Nick (Mel Gibson) after he had an accident. At first he was scared of the ability he acquired, but later he learned to appreciate it and used it to his advantage. Asking for a miracle to hear what someone is thinking can be a bit of selfish, but admit it or not, we have that certain desire to have this ability, right?

Simon Birch. Simon has a condition that stunts his growth; but his faith in God is strong. Simon believes that God has a purpose for giving him his condition. It’s really amazing to see how positive he is despite his condition. Simon’s faith is truly a miracle — something many of us need.

It’s a Wonderful Life. The question if guardian angels are true always lingers on people’s mind. The movie shows a guardian angel preventing a man from committing suicide. The angel shows him how important he is to his loved ones. Maybe angels are just around us taking on human forms. They could be the helpful people who never get tired of lending a hand to us.

Michael. One of the miracles that people desire to witness is to see an angel. The movie will introduce viewers to Michael (John Travolta), the angel who you never thought would be one. He smokes, he drinks, he speaks the way we do, these are just some of his earthly behaviors. But, he is truly an angel. As the tagline goes, “He’s an angel, not a saint”

Meet Joe Black. What if you can meet the man who will take your soul? That will truly be scary. In the movie, Bill Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) encounters Death in human form; his name is Joe Black (Brad Pitt). The mission is for Joe to take Bill with him; but there’s a problem, Joe seems to like the life here on earth especially when he falls with Bill’s daughter. Will miracle change Joe’s mission in taking Bill’s life?
