Bad Boys of '50s

The Philippine Star

Lou ‘Jojo’ Salvador Jr. was the James Dean of the ’50s, cast in bad-boy roles, among them Barkada, produced by LVN and directed by his own father, Lou Sr. Jojo’s co-stars included Marita Zobel, playing his love interest, and real-life sister Chona Sandoval.

Playing his barkada (read: bad boys) were Hector Reyes, Ding Royo, Bobby Villar, Arturo Moran, Bebong Osorio and Ike Jarlego.

Osorio and Jarlego would later direct movies, with the latter starting as film editor.

In the ’70s, Jojo played a supporting role in Lino Brocka’s Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag and starred in Pag-ibig, Magkano Ka, produced and directed by his late brother Leroy Salvador. Jojo migrated to the US and worked at a casino in Las Vegas where he died early this year.  — RKC
