Coming Soon: Iskul Bukol (20 Years After)

ME, STARZAN - Joey de Leon -

Narito naman ang isang Breaking News kiddies:

Oh my juice! Nag-start nang mag-shooting for the movies Ang “school-iosis” sa TV n’yo noong eighties —

Iskul Bukol (20 Years After), Yes! Yes, it is!

So start spreading the news aming mga ka-kulto,

Twenty years after, so marami nang nabago,

As a matter of fact, silang tatlo na’y b’yudo,

Do you still remember A-go-go Banana?

Miss Mercy Taga was Tito’s favorite dancer,

They were always holding hands whenever together.

Kaya pala hawak-hawak ng Joey’s brother

Mga kamay ni Mercy, so she could not order!

May museo pa nga ang libu-libo n’yang shoes.

Siempre’y may pantapat naman mga hikahos,

‘Yun bang suelas at takong ay halos maubos,

Sino naman daw pinaka-konti sapatos?

Sirit na you?

‘Cause today’s his birthday, atin s’yang dakilain.

Kaya a very happy birthday Mang Confucius,

Yes, today is the birthday of Confucius, the social philosopher who made famous the Golden Rule and one of my favorite quotations — “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

To those who love their jobs, congratulations!

And to those who hate their jobs, find another saying!

Speaking of “congratulations,” I would like to congratulate The Philippine Star for being the most widely read newspaper in Metro Manila in a recent survey by Nielsen Media Research.

And since puro “CON” ang topics natin ngayon (Confucius and Congratulations), not to mention the Con-artistry of the Escalera brothers, dagdagan na natin ng isa pang “CON” — Confession — Iko-confess ko na sa inyo ang isang sikreto!

Did you know that many of the names in Iskul Bukol  were taken from terms in the Chinese game of Mahjong? Here are a few examples:

ESCALERA (“in order” or “in sequence”) — the family name of Joey and Tito.

WANBOL (from “one ball”) — the name of our university.

KANG (“four of a kind”) — the family name of Helen, a former girlfriend of Tito Escalera.

FLORES (“flowers”) — the family name of Kaye Torres’ character.

And there were also other characters in the show using family names or nicknames like: PAO, CHOW, PUNG, etc.

Why Mahjong? Because we, especially Tito and this writer, simply believe that: “Hanggat may Mahjong, may Escalera!”

And why use Mahjong in a sitcom about school? Because FLUSHES (tiles of the same suit) sounds like CLASSES!

CLASS DISMISSED!

Teka nga pala, bakit hindi natin tapusin ito ng isa pang quotation, not from Confucius but from Aling Zeny —  isang naka-mahjong ko nuong araw nang nag-uumpisa pa lang akong matutong maglaro.

“TO DIE IS TO REST, BUT TO PLAY MAHJONG IS THE BEST!” — Aling Zeny.
