A role perfect for Sheryn

Bot Glorioso - The Philippine Star

She is the voice behind the many theme songs of ABS-CBN soaps that keep on playing in the background before and after each heart-touching episode that makes televiewers cry some more. But Sheryn Regis is not only confined to singing. She, too, can cry buckets in one scene and be outrageously funny in another. She doesn’t even mind playing supporting roles as they give her the opportunity to portray as many characters as possible without having to worry about popularity.

“I also wanted to act and show the actor in me since I was into stage plays before. It doesn’t matter whatever role is given me as long as it fits my personality,” Sheryn says.

It was in 2005 when Sheryn started wishing for a show that would show the actor in her. Her appearances on shows like Bida si Mister, Bida si Misis and Nginiig were just icing on the cake. It was only on Lovespell Presents: Cinderella where Sheryn played fairy godmother that she made a new mark as comedienne.

Before emerging first runner-up in the first season of Star in A Million in 2003, she was a stage play actress in her native Cebu and has already known how it is to perform in musical plays in front of the American and Canadian audiences. She also underwent acting workshops with Gina Alajar and Leo Martinez.

This time, the Kapamilya network has tapped Sheryn to portray Kylie Torres on I Love Betty La Fea, airing weeknights on Primetime Bida. She feels it is a role fits her as it reflects her many sides except for Kylie’s being a chikadora.

“I am proud to be part of the teleserye. I was asked for a go-see and I didn’t know what it means,” Sheryn says. “‘Yun pala I got the role which fits me perfectly.”

On the teleserye, Sheryn’s Kylie is the secretary of Joem Bascon’s Mario Collantes and the friend of Bea’s Betty who speaks her mind whenever there are things she wants to point out to Betty.

Kylie’s assertiveness and open-mindedness make it easy for Sheryn to act as natural as natural can be. She, too, can be brutally frank like Kylie. But Sheryn has to brush up on being a chikadora.

“Personally, I am more of an observer. I don’t really engage myself talking about things to everybody. So I have to learn how to act as if I am a natural chikadora,” the Star Magic talent shares.

Training under direk Rahyan Carlos and Bodjie Pascua, she adds, has helped her get the feel of the character and improve her talent as well. Still, Sheryn finds TV acting challenging as there are words hard to pronounce due to her Visayan accent. She also admits there are some words she doesn’t even understand.

“Like iling. The first time I read it in the script, I was clueless about what it means,” she relates. Thanks to her co-stars and everybody in the set during their thrice-a-week taping; they are ready to help for easy comprehension of the dialogues.

“I enjoy every moment acting and if given another chance I want to do drama,” Sheryn says.

But it doesn’t mean she gives more priority to her acting over singing. In fact, Sheryn is in LA right now for One Kapamilya Go with some of the Kapamilya stars.

Does she still get to spend quality time with her husband Earl Echiverri and daughter Sweety?

“Definitely. I tutor my daughter whenever I’m at home and check on our boutique (Blends Boutique) with my husband who has been supportive since I entered showbiz,” she replies.

Sheryn will also soon be seen in Utoy with Dolphy and Makisig Morales.
