Entertainment

A reason to feel bothered

SIZZLING HOT - Juliana Palermo - The Philippine Star

Television shows the past few weeks didn’t interest me much because I feel like watching the same thing over and over again.

This is merely a second part of my thoughts on how technology has affected our lives. But sad to say, it seems negative things sell more than the good old “boring” stuff.

Given the choice, I would create and promote shows that push good ideas and enlighten those who are in the dark.

No matter what we do, entertainment is already part of our lives. It greatly influences the way we think, live, and see the world as a whole.

Sometimes, wrongdoings bring us recognition and popularity. But what about the good guys? Have we even bothered to pay attention to them? It certainly is perfectly normal to notice the “bad stuff” more.

This is precisely why I felt the need to write about a video I saw as I flipped through channels yesterday.

Some of you may have seen this music video and may have different opinions about it, but I definitely stand more on the side of those who feel bothered about it.

Evidence is the title of the song sung by Urbandub or Udub. I like the lyrics and the song itself, until I saw the music video that left me confused.

It features Iza Calzado and Ryan Eigenmann along with the band. It tells the story of a guy whose girlfriend Iza gets caught in bed with another man (Ryan).

I’ve probably seen hundreds of music videos, but I have never seen anything like that. It is very artistic, but in a much deeper level.

In the beginning, the video clip shows happy moments between Gabby Alipe (Urbandub vocalist) and Iza as a couple. It looks like a movie compressed into a four-minute clip.

Later, Iza is spotted in a grocery store with Ryan. Apparently, the vocalist’s friend tips him off about his girl’s secret rendezvous.

The clip gets exciting as you keep on watching. You keep on wondering what will happen. Because of this, I myself didn’t pay attention to the song itself anymore.

The video ends with the singer shooting both his girlfriend and her man. What caught my attention were the actors’ bloody scenes.

To top it all, the boyfriend beats up his girlfriend with a hammer. The closing shot shows the lead singer sitting on a chair and holding his girlfriend by the wrist. Blood is all over him and the room as well.

I was in shock. It took me time to react to what I had just seen. I wasn’t too sure whether I could justify it from an artistic point of view or let it worry me.

It took time for me to gather my thoughts on this before finally deciding that it bothered me more than anything else I’ve seen especially on MTV channel.

Iza was the first person I expressed my opinion to and she didn’t sound surprised at all. In fact, she said the clip I had seen was already the edited version and not the director’s cut, which was aired on MYX a few weeks ago.

I was told that a lot of people appreciated the way Evidence was interpreted on this video. A lot of time and effort must have been spent on its concept.

Artistic is the perfect word to describe it. I really feel the song itself is good on its own and would have made it to the top without the violence seen on its music video.

Urbandub has already made a name for itself, not to mention the fact that the members are Bisaya like me. I like the band’s music and hope that the members consider their younger fans and audiences when they promote their music.

A lot of channels these days no longer have parental guidance rating/advisory and can be accessed by younger adults and children at home.

Please don’t hesitate to let me know your thoughts on the Evidence music video directed by Quark Henares.

By the way, see how good Diana Zubiri and me are in dealing with the lie detector in John Lapus’ Don’t Lie To Me segment on Showbiz Central today at 4 p.m.

Have a wonderful day! You may e-mail me at [email protected].
