I believe in miracles

SIZZLING HOT - Juliana Palermo - The Philippine Star

A year ago, I wrote about unconditional love and how it affects us. The way I see things now hasn’t changed a bit. The reason I want to write an update on that thought of mine a year ago is I want to share something very special with you and I call it a miracle. Reading through my column last year makes me suddenly feel sad again. My thoughts turn once more to my brother, who is so unlike most of us.

As I’ve said, I want to know if he hears me, if he understands me, if he feels my unconditional love for him.

Love is what holds us together. His laughter gives me hope. These are some of my heart’s desires back then, not realizing that the Higher Being would answer my prayers! Thank God I have been getting one miracle after another these past few weeks. I am living proof that love can heal anything and everything.

My family and I talk with my brother Doods, even if he doesn’t really answer back.

We talk to him just like anyone would. We tell him stories, ask his opinion and keep on trying every day. One time, Doods was in a bad mood. I had a birthday celebration to attend to that night, so I got home a little late.

I checked him out in his room where he was already asleep. It was past 1 a.m. when I finally crawled into bed to get some rest.

At around 3 a.m., I woke up crying and bothered by this nightmare I had about my brother. I was confident he was in his room sleeping and so I kept on trying to fall back to sleep.

The clock had already ticked to 4 a.m. and I still was having the same nightmare. I then decided to go out and get a glass of water only to find our front door wide open.

I panicked and quickly checked my brother in his room but he was gone. Running out to look for him, wishing this was just another nightmare, made me realize my brother means a whole lot more to me than words could ever explain.

I found him walking towards the swimming pool with his toys in hand. I was frozen for a minute in disbelief.

I didn’t know whether I should jump over the third floor balcony and get him or scream for help. I don’t remember running down the stairs just to get near him.

Everything happened so fast and I felt as if I was one of the characters in the movie Jumper.

That night was unforgettable. I sat with him and had a really long talk with him, not knowing whether he was paying any attention. I begged him to speak to me so many times, to no avail. It was this year when he started sleeping late and I was able to bring him to Baclaran church.

So, here’s the miracle I’ve been trying to tell you, My brother spoke to me!

One Sunday afternoon, while he was tuned in to the TV set, he suddenly called my friend and said, “Kuya.” My friend replied, “Yes, Doods, what’s up?” Doods quickly answered, “How are you?”

It brought tears to my eyes. I could not believe what I just heard. It was a miracle.

Not too long after that, I had tapings one after the other and I hadn’t been home much.

I had to leave at 5 a.m. one day to get to our location and Doods was already up listening to his transistor radio.

As I kissed him goodbye and told him where I was going for taping, he gave me his usual goodbye kiss and hugged me. When I got closer to the door, he said, “Ingat ha!”

I was half asleep at that time and had to ask him, “What? Can you say that again please?” and he said it again! “Ingat ha!” is one line that answered all my questions and has proven me God is good.

Yes indeed! Miracles do happen if only we believe! I couldn’t be any thankful for all the blessings, especially the brother God has given me.

I hope this simple story inspires you to believe that miracles really do happen. If it’s meant to be, it will be and only God knows when the perfect time is. I hope you all had a great Holy Week. God bless us all.
