A love to last a lifetime

SIZZLING HOT - Jualiana Palermo - The Philippine Star

It is almost hard to believe that anything would have a happy-ever-after ending. Such things only happen inside movie theaters. I don’t mean to make it sound as if I don’t believe in becoming genuinely happy, but it is very rare to find anything that lasts in this world, especially relationships.

As time goes by, everything literally gets easier and easier. You press a few buttons in the microwave and voila! You’ve got a meal for yourself. Or maybe you just go through a drive-thru fastfood place.

Cooking from scratch is no longer in demand since almost every other place delivers food right at our doorsteps.

Pictures are no longer as important as they were back in the days when our parents would have them developed and placed nicely in an album or frames to share with visitors.

We don’t even need to bring cameras anymore because most people own a camera phone these days. Another thing that has become a great hit in the market are phones that don’t have buttons, just touch screens.

Everything seems so much easier. Even pressing buttons to dial someone in our phones no longer requires pressure from our fingertips. You just touch and go.

My point is, what is this world coming to? Almost everything has an easier way out. And it just doesn’t make sense to me.

In case some of us haven’t noticed, these are the same things that devalue certain things in life.

It’s much easier to just go to a fancy restaurant, get served good food, then just pick up and leave.

It’s so unlike being home and making an effort to cook and prepare everything from scratch.

I appreciate that more because whoever invited me went an extra mile to prepare a meal. All this may sound so extreme since it’s already 2008, and it is only right that things get easier every day.

What’s sad about it is that a lot of the other things that used to have value are no longer as valuable to a lot of people out there.

I just saw 27 Dresses and it made me realize a lot of things. Jane, played by Katherine Heigl of Knocked Up, loves attending weddings.

The first scene sees Jane attending two weddings in one night. She is like a girl friend of mine who actually attended four weddings in one weekend.

Her fascination for weddings has turned her into the “go to” person when it comes to making arrangements.

At a young age, she has already attended literally 27 weddings, in a bridesmaid’s dress, of course.

After gladly assisting all these weddings, it becomes her sister Tess’ (Malin Akerman) turn to get married.

You’d think Jane would be excited, don’t you? This time, though, Tess is getting married to George (Edward Burns), Jane’s boss. Now what’s the problem?

George is the only reason why Jane hasn’t made a career change since college graduation. She’s been madly in love with him all these years she worked as his assistant.

There are a whole lot of twists in the story and even more people involved. But this is not one of those predictable films where you automatically know who ends up with who.

After seeing the movie, I realize even marriage has lost its true value and that it’s no longer something only two people madly in love with each other get into.

I couldn’t imagine how a friend of mine could attend four weddings all in one weekend, and in a small country at that.

I still don’t understand how a number of Hollywood personalities get married then get divorced literally on the same day.

It is amazing how much things change and how rare it is to find the real thing these days. As the saying goes, “Easy come, easy go.”

But you’ll be surprised and inspired at the same time, knowing that true love still exists in this chaotic world as long as you mean the other well.

Have a wonderful week ahead!
