Sabado Boys beef up weekend primetime TV
They share a knack for musicality and a passion for performing. But who would have thought that band front liners can come together to host a weekly musical talk show?
That’s what Luke Mijares, Top Suzara, Paolo Santos, DJ Myke, Jimmy Bondoc and Mike Chan exactly did when they banded together to form Sabado Boys, a group which hosts a show of the same title, now on its third season on RPN 9.
Music, talk and comedy are the staples of Sabado Boys. For the first time, the six solo performers have come together to bring different styles of music each week. The show features special arrangements of pop songs performed together by the hosts and special guest artists to spice up every Saturday night. There are also different segments with the six popular male vocalists who are out to prove their knack for hosting.
For the third season of Sabado Boys, a blocktimer, Etcetera Events Managament Production, comes in to bankroll the program. The team, led by Dong Callao as executive producer and son Dei as associate producer and marketing director, is an organization of professionals in the different facets of production, sales advertising and promotion officially.
Formed in 2003, Etcetera became the proud sister company of Adstratworld Inc., which puts up giant billboards all over the country. Sabado Boys appends Etcetera’s increasing long list of impressive credentials, including its strong, diverse potential in creative communication, promotion and production.
The show’s continued quest for a better, more exciting offering for viewers compelled the production and creative team to come up with a charged-up new season. “The beefed-up new season of s bound to unite home buddies and thrill-seekers in an act of devotion to RPN 9 every Saturday night,” Dong Callao informs. “The new format was also our answer to requests by fans to allow them to make the show more interactive to viewers.”
“I’m very happy about the new season because it’s a new and more exciting Sabado Boys. Super-excited na akong bulabugin ang buong Pilipinas,” says DJ Myke, the human beatbox who hosts the Kantang Kalye segment with Paolo Santos. “It’s really something to watch out for.”
R ’n B crooner Luke Mijares, meanwhile, takes pride in the show’s thrust. “The show promises one-of-a-kind entertainment that fuses all the ingredients of a Saturday night. Whether or not you decide to just stay at home or you’re conditioning yourself for a
Paolo assures the new season is a lot better, since the program is already structured. Also, the fun element remains which is vital to the show’s appeal. “If they enjoy going on gimmicks every Friday, I’m sure mas masayang gimikan ‘to because of our new time slot.”
Jimmy Bondoc attributes his excitement to the show’s production management and staff, “I consider myself very lucky because I’m working with very good people from the industry.”
At the helm of the new season’s creative team is TV and events director Yeng Grande, who takes charge of the nitty-gritty of the musical-talk TV show’s new format.
“We have infused a lot of changes in the new season” Yeng grants. “First is the creative handle making the set more interactive and refreshing each week. The segment Groupie of the Week serves as the hosts’ bonding moment with fans by using a sofa that can be found inside a building in one episode, a baseball field in the next and so on.
“Another segment, Kantang Kalye, focuses on the participation of everyday people walking on the street. We also have very interesting celebrities and artists in line as guests to give each episode more luster.”
Jamming is hosted by Mike Chan and Top Suzara, who will talk about a music-related topic with a special guest, either inside the rehearsal studio, performance venue or the ubiquitous sofa. The conversation should be candid, spontaneous, light and fun.
Spotlight is hosted by Jimmy Bondoc and Luke Mijares, who watch the invited new band to play their original song on camera. After the performance, Jimmy and Luke will talk about their music. The hosts can give their honest yet constructive criticism regarding the band’s performance, their sound and their over-all impact.
The show’s producers are happy with the way the boys are bonding and revealing their candid selves on the TV camera while excelling in what they do best. They are determined and eager to make Sabado Boys a successful venture not only for them, but for the six talented individuals who excel in their respective genres.
The boys attribute the show’s continued success to the support they get from the viewers and fans who keep on sending letters, text messages and e-mails for suggestions in terms of guestings and feature segments.
