Celine Live in Las Vegas
March 29, 2004 | 12:00am
Celine Dion, the French Canadian songbird who took the world by storm with one big hit song after another is now staying put in one special place where she will reign supreme for three years. It all started some years ago when she was invited to do some shows in Las Vegas. But in typical pop diva fashion, she wanted her show to be truly special, something that would be bigger than any concert she had ever done and maybe more spectacular than any that has been seen in Americas Sin City.
Celine got her wish. The entire process took two years, a whopping $95 million to build the huge Colosseum theater at the famous Caesars Palace hotel and casino in Las Vegas expressly for her and another $30 million, which is still no chicken feed, to put together the show created by the man behind the unique Cirque du Soleil, Franco Dragone.
The extravagant result titled A New Day, after her last studio album, has 50 dancers, a flying orchestra, and a gigantic 120-feet wide, 40-feet high screen for her constantly-changing, very dramatic background. The super production debuted a year ago to a crowd of more than 4000 people, many of whom reportedly spent $500 for a seat. Stunned by the unique combination of sight and sound they were treated to that evening, they all agreed that it was indeed, a show to remember.
That historic debut was the first of the 600 shows that Celine agreed to do in Las Vegas. That means she will spend three years at the Colosseum and although there might be some objection from the natives of the place, it cannot be denied that she has also become the reigning queen of Vegas. The first 200 nights are over, but the tickets continue to sell, many of them sold way, way in advance of the dates because of the huge demand.
Some of the awesome numbers and a feel of the excitement of that opening night have been captured in the special presentation Celine Live in Las Vegas Opening Night Live! You will not see the nearly two-hour concert but Celine will be there talking about the show and then singing, dancing and even flying up, up in the air. The Power of Love, I Drove All Night and Its All Coming Back to Me Now are some of the songs included. With the also famous Justin Timberlake as host, this hour-long presentation will be shown for the first time in Star World on cable on Wednesday, March 31 at 10 p.m. Will it whet your appetite to watch the real thing?
There is a big chance you will say yes to that question, but admit it, only the privileged few from hereabouts will get the chance to witness this stunning presentation. If you start counting how much the air fare, hotel, tickets and pocket money and then multiplying the answer by P57, it is doubtful if you will even dare to dream of watching Celine perform live somewhere in your future. Hopefully, they will one day release the entire thing on video, but until that happens, the thrill of A New Day will remain a distant dream.
So, dont forget to watch Celine Live in Las Vegas .Opening Night Live! on Star World. If you missed that, you can still catch the special on Thursday, April 1 at 1:30 a.m. and at 2 p.m. or on Sunday, April 4 at 1 p.m..
Celine Dion comes from Quebec in the North Eastern part of Canada. She is the youngest of 14 children in a poor family and her rags-to-riches story is an inspiration to many young girls. She crossed over to the US and soon to international fame with her rendition of soundtrack tunes like the theme from Beauty and the Beast with Peabo Bryson, When I Fall in Love from Sleepless in Seattle and Because You Loved Me from Up Close and Personal.
Of course, her biggest hit was a song that became so popular a few years ago some people admitted being sick and tired of having to listen to it everywhere almost all of the time. It also comes from a movie and it is the beautiful My Heart Will Go On from the super blockbuster Titanic.
