Sineskwela, a science education show for children produced by ABS-CBN Foundation Inc., won the Prix de Jeunesse, or Youth Prize, at the 20th International Television Science Programme Festival. The grand prize was given for the Sineskwela episodes on conservation efforts for the Pasig River, directed by Jon Red and written by Gladys Mallillin.
Philippine consul to France Josefina Ingles-Estrada received the award for Sineskwela. Sineskwela airs 9 a.m., Monday to Friday on ABS-CBN Channel 2. It also airs on Studio 23 and the Knowledge Channel. Once an important cultural, historical, and historic symbol, the Pasig River has been declared dead due to pollution. Sineskwelas two episodes on the Pasig teaches Filipino children about the biological and commercial importance of the river.
Episode 1 focuses on how the once pristine Pasig River has deteriorated slowly and painfully over the years due to human activity. In episode 2, children grow to realize the benefits of having a biologically active river and come up with some practical ideas for helping the Pasig return to its former pristine condition.
