Box-Office King and Queen crowned

Preparations are underway for the awards presentation of the 32nd annual Box-Office King and Queen of Philippine Movies. To be produced by Tessie Celestino Howard’s Airtime Marketing, Inc., the awards night will be held on April 10 at the UP Theater.

The Box-Office King and Queen is a project of the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Inc. (GMMSF), an organization that continuously gives scholarship grants to indigent students mostly in the Bulacan area. Heading the GMMSF is Corazon Samaniego, the daughter of the late Guillermo Mendoza, a former town mayor and philanthropist in Bulacan.

It was actually Ferdie Villar who launched the Box-Office King and Queen in 1970. His other baby then was the Miss Republic of the Philippines contest which chose the country’s delegates to the Miss World congress in London. Villar, however, eventually left for abroad in the late ’70s and the task of selecting the Philippine representative to Miss World was given to the Mutya ng Pilipinas group. The rights to the Box-Office King and Queen awards presentation, meanwhile, went to the heirs of Guillermo Mendoza who since then have continued the tradition of honoring the most popular actors and actresses in the fields of movies and television.

Last year, the Box-Office King and Queen winners were Robin Padilla and Vilma Santos, Mr. RP Movies was Piolo Pascual, while Joyce Jimenez was voted Ms. RP Movies. Chosen Prince and Princess of RP Movies were Jericho Rosales and Jolina Magdangal.
