Songbird Sings The Classics pays tribute to the music of Henry Mancini, Barry Manilow, Michel Legrand, Burt Bacharach and Leonard Bernstein among others. It is one evening of love, sorrow, heartbreak and memories. Regine Velasquez will be singing a different tune though still retro in genre. Steering away from the light, pop tunes of the ’70s as heard in her successful R2K album, the Songbird breathes new life to classic love songs such as Somewhere Down The Road, What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life, I Only Have Eyes For You and If You Go Away, as well as a Basil Valdez medley for that OPM touch, in a way that will be phenomenal and unforgettable.
Giving a different sound to these pieces is a task Gerard Salonga takes seriously. Drawing inspiration from his past works, this Summa Cum Laude graduate of Berklee College of Music is making sure this first-time collaboration with Regine is special and perfect. But Regine and Maxi-Media have no doubts Gerard will make spectacular arrangements. After all, he has been musical director for Lea: The Millennium Concert, Lea: The Homecoming Concert and the recently concluded musical They’re Playing Our Song. Songbird Sings The Classics is part of the year-long celebration of Regine’s 14th year in the business. The concert is set only on Oct. 6, 9 p.m. at The Grand Plaza Ballroom of The Westin Philippine Plaza. Tickets are priced at P1,200 and P800 (plus a P250 minimum consumable charge payable at the gate) and are available at all National Bookstore TicketWorld Outlets (891-5610) and at Maxi-Media (893-7737, 813-8999).
