Lyrids meteor shower tonight
MANILA, Philippines — Up to a dozen meteors per hour will light up the Philippine night sky this weekend, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
The Lyrids meteor shower will peak tonight until before dawn tomorrow.
“The shower typically generates a dozen meteors per hour under optimal conditions with a brief maximum that lasts for less than a day,” PAGASA said.
Meteor showers can be seen with the naked eye.
Although not numerous, Lyrids are bright and fast meteors, the weather agency said.
The Lyrids shower has been observed for more than 2,600 years, according to PAGASA. Chinese records show that “stars fell like rain” during the meteor shower of 687 B.C., it said.
