Towns warned of ash fall after Mayon eruption Sunday morning

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology recorded another phreatic, or steam-driven, eruption from Mayon Volcano in Albay on Sunday morning.
 
According to a bulletin, the eruption began at 8:49 a.m. and lasted for about five minutes. It was the second since Saturday afternoon.
 
"The event produced a grayish steam and ash plume that was largely obscured by summit clouds," Phivolcs said.
It added residents of Barangay Anoling in Camalig town heard rumbling sounds and detected a sulfurous odor.
 
The agency said it is conducting close monitoring of the volcano and will inform the public of any developments.
 
The volcano is on Alert Level 2 and the public has been advised to keep out of the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone around Mayon.
 
Residents of nearby towns, especially along the southwest and west slopes, have been advised to watch for ash fall and to protect their nose and mouth with a damp, clean cloth or a dust mask.
