'Gorio' maintains strength as it moves closer to Taiwan

Typhoon Gorio was spotted at 265 km north northeast of Basco, Batanes as of 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2017. PAGASA

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Gorio (international name Nesat) maintained its strength as it blew toward Taiwan on Saturday, PAGASA said.

Storm signal no. 2 is still hoisted over the Batanes group of islands while Babuyan Group of islands is still under storm signal no. 1. PAGASA warned of possible storm surges at coastal areas.

Packing maximum winds of 145 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 180 kph, the typhoon was spotted at 265 km north northeast of Basco, Batanes as of 10 a.m. Saturday. It maintained its northwesterly course at 15 kph.

Fishermen were advised against venturing into the northern and western seaboards of central and southern Luzon. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected within the typhoon’s 500-km diameter cloud circulation, PAGASA warned.

The state weather bureau continues to monitor the tropical depression situated over the West Philippine Sea at 435 km west of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

Both "Gorio" and the tropical depression, according to PAGASA, "will continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon which will bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains over the western section of Northern and Central Luzon while light to moderate rains over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon."

The typhoon is expected to exit PAR on Sunday morning.
