Davao City mulls inspection stations over checkpoints
DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The city government is planning to establish permanent traffic inspection stations as part of its counterterrorism measures.
Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio bared the plan during a recent meeting of the city peace and order council attended by police and military officials, and representatives from the business sector.
Duterte-Carpio said the city might start building permanent inspection stations in Lasang next year.
“We will start at the Lasang checkpoint, where there is a government property that we can use,” she said.
The city has checkpoints in Lasang, Toril and Marilog, all managed by Task Force Davao.
The permanent traffic stations will have X-ray scanners and other equipment to detect contraband such as drugs and firearms.
Police regional director Chief Superintendent Manuel Gaerlan expressed support for the plan, saying it will help the city fight terrorism and drugs.
“This will strengthen our security and counterterrorism campaign,” Gaerlan said.
