Let’s inspire our athletes to give their best

REAL SPORTS SCENE - Anthony Suntay - The Philippine Star

Sports is such an integral part of our lives, and more and more people are looking towards leading a healthy and active lifestyle. Fitness gyms are flourishing, and more and more events geared towards various sporting activities are everywhere, it seems like just about everybody is looking to get into a sport.

What boggles the mind though is how come this has not translated to more spectators in the stands. I’m talking specifically of football at the moment, since I have been involved in covering the matches of the United Football League (UFL) for TV5 these past few years.
With the phenomenal rise of our national team, The Azkals, football has enjoyed a tremendous growth spurt, our national league has been getting more attention, and more kids are getting into the sport at their all- important developmental stage.

This is all well and good, but I’ve also always believed that it is great bonding time for family and friends to go out and enjoy watching a game. This is also helpful for young players to add to their game. By watching the best, you pick up pointers here and there that you can include in your play.
But I think that inasmuch as playing sports is at an all-time high, watching games live still has a long way to go.

And this has carried on to the national team support.

Just see the recent appeal of Azkals team manager Dan Palami, where he’s inviting the local community to lend support to their 2018 World Cup qualifying game against Uzbekistan on Sept. 8 at the Philippine Stadium.

“We need the support of Filipino football enthusiasts and even non-football fans to fill up the stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan, and applaud and inspire our players to give their best for the country,” Palami said.

“There’s no better way to push our Azkals to play at the top of their game, score goals, and impose a high-pressure defense on the opponents than the thunderous applause, encouraging shouts of fans and electric atmosphere in the stadium,” coach Tom Dooley added.
So let’s all get out there and support our national team, and try to make it a habit to go out and watch games live!
