NPA leader among 4 slain in Apayao clash
LA TRINIDAD, Benguet , Philippines – An alleged leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) has been identified as one of four persons killed in a firefight with police officers in Luna town, Apayao Friday.
The alleged rebel leader was identified as Efren Cachola Arquillo, alias Mario Domogan of Allacapan, Cagayan.
Aside from Arquillo, Vinia Alejandro alias Ka Dina and Rani, and Rhoby Edillo were killed in an encounter in Barangay Calayukay. The other fatality has yet to be identified.
Authorities recovered an M-16 rifle, an Uzi sub-machine pistol, a caliber .38 revolver, two shotguns, two hand grenades, assorted ammunition and documents from the fight scene.
Cordillera police director Chief Superintendent Isagani Nerez said the incident shows that police officers are prepared to go after groups out to disrupt peace in the region.
