Run for Zonta

SPORTS EYE - Raffy Uytiepo - The Freeman

Buttered...este battered women, molested children and rape victims will soon have a place to seek solace and justice.  Zonta Club of Cebu under its current president Nellie Chiu, is organizing the Run for Zonta Says No on November 23 at the Terraces, Ayala Center Cebu. This noble undertaking  has the following objectives: To increase awareness on Zonta’s advocacy of preventing violence against women and children (VAWC). Involve the community in all related projects and activities to promote VAWC, to raise funds that would serve as seed fund for the construction of the  Zonta Center for VAWC. The other objectives are to raise funds, to support all activities for the Zonta VAWC service and projects advocacy, strengthen multi-disciplinary collaboration and coordination towards sustainable projects and activities that involve the general public in order to keep raising the awareness on the importance related to preventing violence against women and children. The race, which I will be directing and officiated by my chief technical director Precing Capangpangan, features the 10K, 5K and 3K distances.  Registration will soon start at designated centers like Runnr in Ayala Center and at the Cebu City Sports Center.  Entry fees are P500 for the 10K, P400 for the 5K and P200 for the 3K. Members of the organizing committee include Melanie Ng, Emily Chioson, Beverly Dayanan, Jane Gocuan, Pilar Puno, Floram Limotlimot, Mila Espina, Stella Bernabe, Tina Ebrada, Anita Sanchez, Linda Binghay, Letty Canoy, Lucille Colina, Vangie auman, Baby Schaap, Irene Caballes, Kristy Luy, Charmaine Ong, Rufina Tanchan and Zeny Uy.  During the organizational meeting, Precing said “ Kita lang lalaki dinhi.” I told Precing, “Next time, mag-wig ta.”

La Salle-Ateneo Run

After a La Salle-Ateneo duel in the UAAP fizzled out after being knocked out by Far Eastern University and National University, respectively, we are cooking another competition next year.  Right after the Spirit of WIPRO Run last month, host and boxing announcer Rico Navarro, presently the athletic director of  Ateneo De Cebu and yours truly, entertained prospects of holding a La Salle-Ateneo Friendship Run. While being considered as rivals “forever,” we are attempting to break that myth and prove that La Sallites and Ateneans could exist together. I’ll soon meet with the La Salle Alumni and Ateneo  Alumni associations of Cebu. One of the half-breeds include Rico, who studied at DAS La Salle in Toledo City.  I’m also planning to include a team competition where the aggregate clockings of top three finishers from both La Salle and Ateneo will be tallied for the win. This early, we got a lot of response from alumni of both schools.  Animo La Salle and fly high Ateneo.

Did you know that....

Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, who was once married to Filipina Isabel Preysler, played professional football with Real Madrid.  Some of his best hits include “Hey” and “To All The Girls I Loved Before,” in a duet with Willie Nelson.

Johnny Mathis, a good friend of the legendary Bill Russel of the Boston Celtics, was once invited to try out for the USA team for the 1956 Olympic Games. Mathis, who is a jumper, declined when he was offered a recording contract on that same year. Johnny’s best hits are “Misty” and “Chances Are.”
