Osmeña: The first gentleman of the Philippines

IYO ANTOY - Antolin dela Cerna - Banat

Sa iyang pakigpulong atol sa centennial celebration, paghandom ni President Sergio Osmeña Sr., si Foreign Minister Carlos P. Romulo, nagkanayon: “In the city where he was born one hundred years ago, we celebrate the memory of Sergio Osmeña, whom we shall remember as the ‘First Gentleman of the Philippines.’  Mr. Osmeña belonged to a long line of leaders who, as crises developed, emerged from the people to lead them to safety.”

Padayon ni Romulo: “Sacrifice of personal glory is history’s measure of the greatness of a leader. The habit of sacrifice was present even when Osmeña’s personal comfort was involved, when he believed it consistent with his duty to country.”

“It was a matter of principle for him. Always the principle was the welfare of the people whom he pledged to serve, and no amount of political expediency would make him betray the principle,” Samot nga wa na kini karon sa atong mga lider. Pastilan.

Elected 1st president of the League of Governors; Cebu’s first district representative. At 29, Speaker of the 1st Philippine Assembly; Senator, Vice President, President of the Philippines.

Acclaimed champion of national unity; foremost Filipino statesman; architect of the establishment of the Philippine Republic; 1903 Bar Exams second placer, 95.66; Co-founder of the Nacionalista Party.
