Vendor sends partner to jail over beatings

Aie Balagtas See - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A 30-year-old vendor sent her partner to jail yesterday for allegedly beating her up every day.

The vendor, a resident of Quiapo, Manila, told police that she fears Albert Astorga, 29, would kill her and her family since he reportedly became dependent on illegal drugs.

She claimed that while she works all day, he does nothing but eat, sleep and take drugs.

The woman said things came to a head when Astorga told her to go home as she was selling goods on the street last Saturday, then started kicking her torso when she stepped into the house.

She said Astorga claimed that someone was calling her name from the window, which faced a waterway.

The vendor told police she ran to the barangay hall for help as Astorga threatened that he would hit her again if she left the house.

Astorga was arrested and is currently detained at the Manila Police District’s women’s desk division.
