IM Joel Pimentel rules Darcy’s Workhorse chessfest
CEBU, Philippines — International Master Joel Pimentel, Jr. was crowned champion of the Darcy’s Workhorse Memorial Cup 2025 Open Rapid Chess Tournament last Tuesday, January 28, at Robinsons Galleria Cebu.
Pimentel completed the 7-round Swiss system competition with a perfect 6.5 points to go home P9,000 richer.
John Lester Belano and Cyril Ortega were tied with 6.0 points each but Belano bagged the first runner-up honors courtesy of a superior tie-break output.
Belano pocketed P7,000, while Ortega received P5,000 for placing third.
Richard Natividad and National Master Rommel Ganzon got P3,000 and P2,000 for winding up fourth and fifth, respectively with 5.5 points apiece.
Rounding up the Top 10 finishers were Allan Salientes, Arena IM Bonn Rainauld Tibod, Mark Lloyd Sy, Tsedekhaor Codilla, and Joel Pacuribot with 5.0 points.
