Cebu’s top chess players clash in CEPCA 34th anniversary tourney today
CEBU, Philippines — Some of the strongest chess players in Cebu will battle for supremacy in the highly anticipated Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association’s 34th Anniversary Tournament billed as the 8th Engr. Boy “Chessmoso” Pestaño Memorial Cup set today (Sunday, November 10) at the Cebu Chess Club located at the 4th level of Robinsons Galleria Cebu near the cinema area.
Competition begins at 10 a.m. After the lunch break, a short opening program will take place at 1 p.m. to be graced by Cebu City Councilor Atty. Rey Gealon and CEPCA officials headed by Engr. Jerry Maratas.
National Masters Rommel Ganzon, Arnolito Cadiz and Rogelio Enriquez Jr. and veteran campaigners Anthony Makinano, Christopher Tubalado and Carlos Moreno III banner the list of top contenders in the one-day tilt supported by Celjem Construction and Development Corporation, JEMAR Engineering Services, ARQ Sports, and Gonzalodo Enterprises.
Also in the mix for the coveted title are the likes of Alleri Somosot, Michael Joseph Pagaran, Joel Pacuribot, and the young but promising Chris Aldritz Pondoyo and John Dave Lavandero.
Aside from the specially-crafted Jun Olis trophy, the champion will go home P10,000 richer.
The second to fifth placers will pocket P7,000, P5,000, P3,000, and P2,000, respectively. The sixth to 10th will receive P1,500, the 11th-15th P1,000, and the 16th to 25th P500 each.
The top three performers among Cepcans A and B, ladies, seniors, 8 Under and 14 Under participants will get an incentive of P1,500, P1,000, and P500. — (FREEMAN)
