Umapad crowned overall champions of 1st Ouano-Dizon Congressional Cup

CEBU, Philippines — Barangay Umapad emerged as the overall champion of the recently concluded 1st Mandaue Ouano-Dizon Congressional Cup (ODCC) Basketball and Volleyball Tournaments participated in by 1,800 athletes from the city’s 27 barangays.

A piece of good news came right away for the Mandauehanons as during the formal awarding ceremony, Mandaue City Lone District Representative Emmarie “Lolypop” Ouano-Dizon, the event organizer, promised that there will be a much bigger and much better tournament next year.

“Extraordinary things await us. And we are just getting started. See you next season,” said Ouano-Dizon to a jampacked crowd at the Barangay Opao gymnasium.

“Sa atong pagpasiugda sa what is now the biggest sports event of the year dinhi sa dakbayan sa Mandaue, my heart is filled with so much happiness and pride, that Mandauehanons were given the chance to experience the thrill, the excitement, the grace in defeat, and the humility in victory.”

“Most important of all, the ODCC has given us a chance to show our unity, our sportsmanship, our teamwork. Pinaagi sa ODCC, napakita nato that everything is possible with hardwork,” she said in a separate video message.

Ouano-Dizon thanked all the players and coaches for their enthusiasm as they are the heart that beats energy into the purposeful undetaking.

She also extended her gratitude to all the barangay captains and councilors, SK officials and the focal persons as they are the driving force behind the tournament’s success.

Meanwhile, Umapad’s volleyball team was crowned as champion in the women’s category and settled for first runner-up in the men’s class.

Dyan Darantinao was hailed as the Most Valuable Player, Cherry Sumayang the Best Setter, Pamela Sumayang the Best Libero, Rochelle Rica Son the Best Server, and Janelle Cabahug the Best Open Hitter.

Tipolo’s Rhea Fuentes was chosen as Best Opposite Hitter and Mary Grace Melendres the Best Blocker.

Umapad’s individual awardees in the men’s side were Royet Varga as the Best Setter and Jewel Cabahug as the Best Server.

Opao’s Rafols Sico grabbed the MVP trophy while his teammates Joseph Tejamo and Mark Lagaran were feted as the Best Libero and Best Blocker, respectively. Guizo’s Menard de la Cerna was honored as the Best Open Hitter and Ruco Academia the Beat Opposite Hitter.

In basketball, Umapad landed at second place in the juniors division. Joseph Lambayan made it to the Mythical Five.

The other basketball champions and MVPs were Pagsabungan/Rey Judilla (40-above), Casuntingan/Peter John Peteros (juniors), and Paknaan/James Villafuerte (seniors).

The members of the Mythical Five were Judilla, Jaypee Alejandro of Subangdaku, Aladin Aguilar of Tabok, Jessie Tano of Paknaan and Retchie Cesa of Cubacub in 40-above, Peteros, Lambayan, BJ Manatad of Labogon, Jerome Doña of Centro, and Kurt Cintore Ramil of Cabancalan in the juniors, and Villafuerte, Kent Gato of Pagsabungan, Vincent Lequin of Opao, John Paul Dugenio of Tabok, and Joseph Mañago of Centro in the seniors.
