CEBU, Philippines — Cebuana chess player Apple Rubin from Toledo City will be donning the country’s tri-colors in the forthcoming 22nd ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships slated on August 21-31 in Vientiane, Laos.

Rubin earned the right to represent the Philippines in the prestigious international competition on account of her remarkable performance in the 2024 National Age Group Chess Championships Grand Finals last week at the Dapitan Sports and Cultural Complex in Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte.

She finished second in blitz and third both in standard and rapid play.

Rubin also bagged the first-place honors in the Under 14 category of the FIDE-rated Mayor Bullet Jalosjos Open Rapid Chess Tournament where chess masters compete regardless of age.

Rubin is one of the brightest products of the intensive grassroots program of the Toledo-Xignex Trojans Chess Club under the guidance of Atty. Jeah Jean Gacang.

“We are always rooting for you, Apple! Remember, when you’re passionate about what you do, God will bring people into your life who believe in you and your dreams, and who will support you in every way possible,” said Gacang.

“As long as you persevere in pursuing your dreams, we’re here for you. This message is for all dreamers too Keep making history and may you continue to fly and soar high as an athlete, growing in this journey with faith from above,” Gacang continued.

In a courtesy call recently, Toledo Mayor Marjorie “Joie” Perales expressed full support in Rubin’s future endeavors.

“Apple, there will be more opportunities for you. You have been the pride of Toledo. This made me push to even support sports tourism! We will be conducting and supporting sports diri sa atong dakbayan and through it, daghan pa ta’g makit-an from grassroots gyud,” said Perales.

“One thing nga mas na proud ko ni Apple is her heart for her family. As early as the age of 14, she has been helping them through her talent. Mao nga we will make more ‘APPLEs’ here in Toledo. Keep reaching your dreams, our Apple. Naa rami mo-support nimo. Good luck on your tournament in Laos. Bring home the victory!” Perales ended.
