Cansaga Fiesta Sports League kicks off today

CEBU, Philippines —  The Cansaga Fiesta Sports League gets underway with its centerpiece basketball tournament today at the Cansaga barangay gym in Consolacion town, north of Cebu.

After the traditional parade of participating teams at 1:30 p.m., a simple program will take place to be highlighted by the selection of best muse, best in uniform and most organized team.

The main attration though of the opening salvo is the exhibition match between the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors and the Cebu Roosevelt Memorial Colleges (CRMC) Mustangs at 8 p.m.

The cage wars features the mini (Under 13), midget (Under 15), SK/juniors (Under 24), senior B (34-below) and senior A (35-above) categories.

Games will be under the supervision of commissioner Virgilio “Jorgue” Ermac assisted by his deputies coach Andrew Quiapo and Marjorie “Coach Tata” Arrofo with Stephen Ababon from the United Basketball Referees Association (UBRA) as technical head.

Aside from basketball, the other events to be contested are women’s volleyball, chess, badminton, boxing, and dayon-dayon volleyball with Melissa Benitez, Engr. Carlito Maglasang, Sturdi Majarocon Rodolfo Maloloy-on, and SK chairman Ron Jake Jabon as coordinators.

Jabon is also the overall chairman of the organizing committee.

The month-long tilt set to spice up Cansaga’s annual fiesta celebration in honor of their beloved patroness Birhen Sa Kalipay on May 1 is fully supported by Cansaga Barangay Captain Peter Cabillada and council members Junie Gervie “ Gerboy” Rosello,  Ruben Sapio, Rodulfo Nacu Jr., Alfie Pitogo, Romeo Alivio, Zenaida Herrera, and Sturdi Majarocon. — EBV
